Repairing a 9th-generation iPad in Barcelona: replacing only the glass

Two parts where the rest of the range has one
On the iPad Air and Pro, the touch glass and the image panel are laminated: bonded to each other with no air gap, which is what gives that sense of drawing straight onto the content. The trade-off is that when the glass breaks, the whole assembly has to go.
The 9th-generation iPad is not laminated. The glass with the digitiser is one part and the LCD is another, and iFixit publishes separate guides for each. In practice: if the iPad was dropped, the glass is broken and the image looks perfect, the glass gets replaced and that is that.
It is worth knowing because it changes the whole conversation about whether repair makes sense. It is the same reason 6th, 7th and 8th-generation iPads keep coming into the workshop: they share this construction, so a broken screen is not a death sentence.

Before you bring it in
Check whether the image looks right before coming
With the screen on and a white background you can tell straight away whether the panel is healthy under the broken glass. That fact changes the scope of the job.
Protect the broken glass in the meantime
A film or some tape on top prevents cuts and, above all, stops shards working loose inside the frame. It also makes the teardown cleaner.

How do I know if mine is a 9th-generation iPad?
Settings, General, About shows the model name. It is the 10.2-inch iPad with a home button from 2021, and it shares its construction with the 6th, 7th and 8th generations.
Can you tell the glass is not laminated?
You notice a small gap between finger and content, exactly as it came from the factory: this iPad was never laminated. The repair does not change how it felt originally.
Does Touch ID in the home button survive?
Yes, as long as your original button is kept and moved across, because it is paired with the iPad’s board. That is part of the job, and we check it with you present at handover.
