This small machine hides an oddity: it is the last desktop Mac whose memory can be changed, even though Apple insists you should not do it yourself.

Upgradeable, but not by the owner
Apple says it plainly in its own documentation: the 2018 Mac mini has no user-installable memory, and to upgrade it you must go to an Apple Store or an authorised service provider. What is interesting is what that sentence concedes without saying it: the memory is socketed, not soldered, and therefore it can be changed.
The reason for the warning becomes clear once it is open: reaching the modules means stripping almost the entire machine, including a metal cage with delicate connections. It is not hard because of the parts, it is hard because of the sequence. With the right tools and no rush it is a perfectly ordinary bench job.
What does not get touched is the storage. This Mac mini carries a T2 chip, so its flash memory is soldered to the board and encrypted in hardware, with the usual consequence: if the board dies, the files stay inside. A 2018 Mac mini can be rejuvenated with memory; it cannot be rejuvenated with storage.

Eight gigabytes was plenty in 2018 and today fills up with a browser open. It is the upgrade that gives the machine several more useful years.
No picture, or it will not boot
With no display of its own, half the diagnosis is ruling out the monitor and the cable. The other half is measuring the board, which we do under a microscope.
It runs hot and stutters
Eight years of dust in the fan and dried-out thermal paste explain most of these cases, and neither is a serious fault.
Before you bring it in
Do not confuse it with the M1 Mac mini and later
From the M1 on, the memory lives inside the chip and there is nothing to upgrade. If yours is from 2020 onwards, this advantage does not apply.
A memory upgrade does not touch your data
The storage stays where it is, soldered, with the system untouched. Even so, a backup before any opening is plain common sense.

Can I upgrade the memory myself?

Can the drive be changed as well?
No. This model has a T2 chip and its flash memory is soldered to the logic board and encrypted in hardware, so there is no drive to remove or replace. For more space, an external drive is the way.
Is it worth upgrading in 2026?
